Favorite War Movie of All Time?
What is your favorite war movie of all time ... and why?
"THE SANDS OF IWO JIMA",
When John Wayne got killed it really ticked me off; I decided then to join the Corps (not corpse). I was two months from my 18th birthday but could not wait, so I took the 8 year enlistment. This movie was similar to a lot of the old movies, it had purpose and understanding that was positive. Most movies today don't have that; I think Avatar had those qualities. Because of the time period the old movies were made they seemed more realistic; equipment, uniforms, and what they had to do to seem that way. Today the special effects make up for the actors faults.
Thanks. That's a classic. They don't make movies the same anymore.
I'm kinda tempted to say the Dirty Dozen off the top of my head... I'll have to do some more thinking, though.
I think it was Courage Under Fire. I love how it looked at the different angles of the life behind the lines. And the action was so well filmed!
My favorite war movie is "All Quiet on the Western Front", the 1930 Lewis Milestone version. I thought the action scenes were remarkable. And then you have Gary Cooper in 'Sergeant York', another great movie for action scenes.
Were those black and white? I enjoy a good black and white movie every now and then.
Band of Brothers is my favorite. I'm a WWII B-17 Pilot.
"Operation Petticoat" was my favorite World War II movie. The book was written by Captain Edward L. Beach,
he commanded submarines during the war. The book was made into a movie after the war. It is slapstick humor
of the best kind. I had the pleasure to meet Capt Beach a number of years ago at the "Submarine Ball" in Orlando,
when I was the president of the Central Florida Navy League (charter member and first president). Having served on
the boats, it meant a lot to me.
I also liked Band of Brothers, The Dirty Dozen, The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Kelly's Heroes, etc.
I enjoy watching WW II movies.
Operation Petticoat - The 1959 or the 1977 TV remake? I'm thinking the first one.
Cary Grant is a favorite actor of mine. I think I remember scenes of that movie.
My favorite is "The Red Badge of Courage" starring real life war hero Audie Murphy. While not as action packed as
"Saving Private Ryan" it stands the test of time and even in back and white is still very watchable.
For me, it's a toss-up between Tora! Tora! Tora! and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. I like both because they depict memorable events in WWII - but, Tora Tora Tora has a bit more seriousness, where Thirty Seconds does allow some comedic times interspersed with the dramatic.
Two runners-up would have to be Fail-Safe and Thirteen Days.
