Cutter Fir returns to Homeport after Deepwater Horizon Deployment 1 year 30 weeks Chief Petty Officer David Mooney, an engineer aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Fir, greets his family at Coast Guard Base Tongue Point in Astoria, Ore., Oct. 22. Fir, a 225-foot seagoing buoy tender, returned to its homeport in Astoria after a four-month deployment in support of Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. Fir is a multi-mission buoy tender with 52 crew members. It services 152 aids to navigation on the river bars of the Washington and Oregon coasts, and conducts law enforcement operations throughout the North Pacific. Stressful day on the Firing Range 1 year 38 weeks Soldier and airmen of Provincial Reconstruction Team Kapisa sprint 500 meters across a range at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center in central Indiana at dawn, Aug. 24. The range is part of the "Stress Fire" lane training aimed at giving troops an opportunity to fire their weapons at fixed targets with elevated heartbeats under a stressful situation, preparing them for deployment to a combat zone.
