Division Marines’ music honors fallen brethren 1 year 13 weeks Sgt. Jason Comfort, a trumpeter with the 1st Marine Division (Forward) Band, plays Taps, Nov. 5, 2010. Comfort, a 21-year-old native of West Linn, Ore., and his fellow band members play Taps to honor fallen Marines during memorial ceremonies at Camp Leatherneck. Taps, also knows as ‘Butterfield’s Lullaby,’ was first played during the Civil War, signifying ‘lights out’ for service members. Today it is ceremonially played to honor those who have given their lives for America’s freedom. Combat Engineer Honored at Memorial 1 year 25 weeks The 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion’s firing detail executes a 21-gun salute before the playing of Taps during Cpl. Paul Miller’s memorial ceremony aboard Camp Delaram II, Aug. 10. Miller, a combat engineer with 3rd CEB, Regimental Combat Team 2, was killed in action while on a patrol. During the ceremony, many Marines from Miller’s unit spoke about Miller’s character and told stories about Miller, as a Marine and a friend. After the ceremony was concluded, Marines passed by Miller’s battlefield memorial to say a quick prayer and salute the fallen Marine. Photo by Sgt.
