Marines Participate in Glendale's Memorial Day Parade During Fleet Week New York 2011 51 weeks 1 day Marines with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, participate in a Memorial Day parade at Glendale N.Y. May 30. Various units from II Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Forces Reserve have organized under the 24th MEU to form the to form the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force - New York. The Marines embarked on the Navy's Amphibious Assault Ships, the USS Iwo Jima and USS New York to take part in Fleet Week New York 2011 from May 25 to June 1. NYC Reacts to Bin Laden's Death 1 year 3 weeks A crowd cheers and chants in excitement at the corner of Vesey St. and Liberty St. next to Ground Zero after hearing that Osama Bin Laden is dead. Bin Laden planned the attacks Sept 11, 2001 and has been hunted by American forces in the years since. He was killed by a raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan near the country's capital. The Freedom Tower, the skyscraper being built where the World Trade Center towers once stood, is now 60 stories tall and was lit up and visible from the street. Air National Guard New York 1 year 24 weeks Members of the 106th Rescue Wing participate in a number of holiday activities during the December drill on Dec. 4, at F.S. Gabreski Airport, Westhampton Beach, N.Y. Members of various units to include the 103rd Rescue Squadron and 106th Medical Group among others dressed up for the event and handed out various souvenirs to the crowd. The parade ended in Hanger B where Col. Thomas J. Owens II introduced a safety brief featuring Senior Master Sgt. Joe Kruk and Capt. Brian Walsh among others. The event was capped off by a holiday party featuring food, drinks and door prizes for all who participated.
